Mocks and Socks

We are excited to launch a brand-new signature event for 2024, and we want you to join us for a different kind of party! On March 19, 2024, we will launch our inaugural Mocks & Socks event at Fair Hill Nature Center – a new way to celebrate an old tradition of the Chesapeake Bay.  

In 1978, Bob Turner, a boatyard worker and avid sailor from the Chesapeake Bay region, unintentionally started a unique tradition to welcome spring.  Tired of the grind of a particularly rough winter, Turner celebrated the Spring Equinox by throwing his socks into a fire exclaiming he was done wearing them until the cold weather returned in the fall. Up and down the Bay, sock burning became a way to say "goodbye” to winter and “hello” to the promise of sunshine and warmer days. This year, we’re bringing it back to Cecil County and making it a party!

Our new signature event will include vendors, a mocktail contest, and a basket raffle. We would love for you to bring your socks and join us as we welcome spring in a way that is so unique to our area. This new event continues the Chamber’s tradition of blending Cecil County history with emerging entrepreneurship as we highlight our local businesses and organizations.
