Name: Book Talk & Book Signing with Nancy Sakaduski
    Date: May 14, 2016
    Time: 12:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
    Event Description:
Nancy Sakaduski, award winning author of How to Write Winning Short Stories will give a talk on the topic at 1pm and will be signing her books from Noon-3pm.

Short stories have become popular again and many writers see them as an opportunity to get published in magazines and anthologies or to win contests. Nancy Sakaduski, award-winning author of How to Write Winning Short Stories, will give a talk on that topic at The Palette &The Page, on Saturday, May 14th. Sakaduski will sign books and answer questions from 12-3pm and give a presentation at 1pm. The free talk is suitable for beginning writers as well as those with some experience.

Sakaduski manages the annual Rehoboth Beach Reads Short Story Contest and has worked with dozens of writers to help them perfect their stories and prepare them for publication. She is the author of 23 published books and the owner of Cat & Mouse Press, a small independent book publisher in Lewes, Delaware.

How to Write Winning Short Stories is a concise (170-page) and practical guide that covers the market for short fiction, how to write beginnings and endings, illustration vs. explanation, premise and theme, structure, setting, characters, dialogue, editing, legal issues, and marketing. The book recently was given a first-place award by Delaware Press Association and is now competing at the national level. The book will be available for $11.95 during the event.

Sakaduski wrote the book after noticing some common mistakes in the entries she received over the years for the short story contest. “Many mistakes authors make are easy-to- fix errors that can make the difference between winning and losing, getting published and not getting published,” she says. “This book is designed to give writers a playbook for success. I tried to make it a useful, yet readable—even entertaining—resource for writers.” The book offers tips on manuscript formatting, submission options, contest entry, and how to get the attention of a publisher or contest judge. How to Write Winning Short Stories is geared especially for beginning writers and writers who are just learning to write short stories, but even experienced writers will find solid advice and useful tips. Each chapter concludes with a handy checklist for reviewing what was learned and checking stories for possible areas of improvement.
