Beginning Italic Calligraphy
with Patti Paulus, Lettering Artist, Drawing & Bookmaking
In this workshop, the minuscule letters of Italic Calligraphy, sometimes referred to as Chancery Cursive, will be studied and explored. It is an elliptically oriented alphabet with branching arches and is normally written on a slant. In the six hour workshop (we will take a break for lunch!), the focus will be on the lower case letters, both mono-line letterforms and letterforms written with a broad edged tool. For the sake of ease and to afford the maximum time on letterforms, the tool of choice will be a fountain pen which will be provided to the students and is theirs to keep following the class. Each student can expect to receive several exemplars, a notebook and the opportunity to communicate with Patti after the class for some additional help and/or critique.
